On the character creation screen, click PvP. Make whatever character you want. When you load, hit j to make your equipment and k to set your skills. You can get new skills by earning faction and cashing in at a priest.

Check out the PvP section on our wiki at http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page and builds discussions in our Gladiator's Arena forum.

If you don't know how to use skills yet, play PvE first.

I would recommend starting with PvE first. If you go to PvP with no skills unlocked and no experience you will get pwned so fast. And don't ever call them attack abilities again, they're skills.

To answer your question. Do as Dansamy said. Then you can do great temple of balthazar quests. Go through the little tutorial and you should get what is called... Balthazar Faction. You can take this balthazar faction and unlock skills, for PVP use only. You can also unlock weapon mods, runes, and heroes for PVP use only.

If PvP is what you like to do, DO NOT go to PvE first. You'll learn so many wrong things in PvE (like, warriors are supposed to tank, and monks are supposed to heal), that it's often too late when you start PvP-ing again. Better go straight for PvP if that's what you want. You can always make a PvE later for the faster unlocks or something.

^^ agreed IF you are only playing GW for the PVP then do that exclusively that way you are not "taught" wrong. PVP is totaly different than PVE..I started into PVP about a month or two ago and had to "unlearn" a few things...if you find yourself getting owned in random arenas go to the zashien challenge and play in there for awhile...it give factions as well as time to learn skills and the proper usage...once u have mastered them or unlocked a couple of build listed here or on guildwiki....go back to RA and see how u do.

Honestly, when I first ventured into PvP, about all I knew was the PvP "Basics". Sometimes I get choked up knowing how long ago that was. When doing PvP, you'll just have to work from the bottom and make your way to the top. The order I did things was Zaishen Challenge -->Zaishen Elite -->Random -->Team -->HA & GvG

I felt doing them in that order helped me develop key skills that prove successful in PvP.
I recommend that you read as much as you can because the more you know the better off you'll be. You can read quite a bit over in the PvP section or on Wiki. That doesn't mean that you should take things word for word because people are wrong, things change, and other factors influence certain things. But this will get you a good start. Isle of the Nameless is a good place to start. There is stuff there regarding the "fundamentals" that you might find helpful. I go there quite a bit to test various builds out to see if it is even work testing further in RA or TA. Zaishen Challenge and Zaishen Elite are pretty easy and will help develop your mind to make adjustments and develop those fundamentals. You'll have to do Zaishen to unlock Random Arenas. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks, but I like to think of Random Arenas as "the unexpected". Though PvP is a "team thing", I think Random Arenas helps develop that "expect the unexpected thing". Team Arenas is sort of your first real-team coordination thing. Hopefully you'll learn how to coordinate skills with fellow group members, learn how to use builds that compliment each other, and communicate together. HA and GvG is basically everything you've done all rolled up into one going at you full force. Although these are my views, others may think differently. If you want to get started in PvP, begin at the bottom and work your way to the top. I wish you luck.
